Clos Ibai Rioja Blanco 2022

Clos Ibai Rioja Blanco is a field-blend white drawn from three old organic plots across Rioja Alavesa.

The fruit comes from Baños de Ebro, Villabuena de Álava and Elciego, three villages of Rioja Alavesa with much the same growing conditions: clay and limestone soils at around 450 metres, and vines averaging 40 years of age. Every plot is certified organic. The blend is mostly Viura, the workhorse white of Rioja, with the balance made up of the varieties that were interplanted in older vineyards, among them Palomino, Malvasía and Garnacha Blanca. Palomino is now rare here and is more familiar as the grape of Jerez, but it persists in Rioja's oldest white plantings. The parcels were picked by hand at the end of September and pressed as whole bunches into concrete and steel for a natural fermentation on indigenous yeast, then matured on lees for eight months. There is no new oak, so the texture comes from lees contact alone.

Drink now and over the next three years. Serve at 10–12°C with grilled white fish, tortilla or a plate of hard cheeses.
