Clos Larrouyat Jurançon Sec Comète 2021

Clos Larrouyat Jurançon Sec Comète is a dry white blending Petit Manseng with a quarter of Camaralet, a local variety now barely seen in the appellation.

Jurançon Sec comes from the same Pyrenean foothills as the region's sweet wines but is picked earlier and fermented dry, retaining the extraordinary acidity the cool terroir provides. Comète is 75 per cent Petit Manseng and 25 per cent Camaralet, a nearly vanished local variety that covers a tenth of Julien Salharang's vineyard; that two of the appellation's more progressive domaines are invested in it, Dagueneau being the other, speaks for its potential. The Camaralet brings a spicy, citrus cut to the juicier Manseng. Fermentations are wild and the wines are raised in old barrels bought from Smith Haut Lafitte, with lees stirring in cooler years to build depth and texture. Malolactic conversion always takes place, needed to balance the acidity. Added sulphur is kept below 40 mg/L and the wines are seldom fined.

Racy and drinkable now, with years ahead of it; serve at 10–12°C with grilled fish, chicken with lemon or a hard sheep's cheese.
