Clos Larrouyat Jurançon Sec Comète 2023

Clos Larrouyat Jurançon Sec Comète is a dry white from the Pyrenean foothills that carries a barrel of Camaralet, a variety all but lost to the appellation.

Jurançon lies south of Pau in the Béarn, where Atlantic rain and mountain air give a long, cool ripening season and the searing acidity that defines the region's whites. Low yields in this vintage meant the Salharangs made a single wine: Petit Manseng and Gros Manseng blended with one barrel of Camaralet, a local variety that covers about a tenth of the vineyard and is now being revived by several of the appellation's more progressive domaines. It brings a spicy, citrus-edged cut to the juicier Manseng. Fermentation is started with a pied de cuve, and the wines are raised in old oak barrels bought in from Pessac-Léognan before blending. The lees are stirred in cooler years to build depth and texture, and malolactic conversion is always allowed to run, which is what keeps the natural acidity in balance.

Drinking well now and good for four or five years. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled trout, roast chicken or a slice of Ossau-Iraty.
