Clos Thierrière Vouvray Les Pleurs 2023

Clos Thierrière Vouvray Les Pleurs is a dry single-parcel Chenin Blanc from a small Vouvray estate.

Vouvray occupies a plateau on the right bank of the Loire east of Tours, clay and flint over tuffeau limestone, given over entirely to Chenin Blanc. The grape's high natural acidity lets a grower make anything from a bone-dry wine to a botrytised sweet one out of the same vineyard, with picking date and residual sugar rather than a separate appellation marking the difference. Les Pleurs is bottled at under three grams of residual sugar, which puts it firmly among the dry wines, where the tuffeau tends to show as a chalky, taut texture rather than as weight. The domaine is a recent addition here and little written about, so this account is of the appellation and the grape.

A dry, mineral Chenin for the table; serve at 10 to 12 degrees with goat's cheese, shellfish or roast pork.
