Description
Comte de Valandy Champagne is a grower Champagne from the Côte des Bar in the far south of the region.
The Côte des Bar sits well south of the main body of Champagne, closer to Chablis than to Épernay, and on Kimmeridgian marl rather than the pure chalk of the Marne. Pinot Noir dominates plantings here and gives wines with more flesh and red-fruited weight than the Côte des Blancs, while the limestone keeps the acidity firm. For much of the last century the district supplied fruit to the large houses further north; growers bottling under their own names are a more recent development, and the best of them work small parcels on the steep slopes above the Aube. This is a Pinot Noir Champagne made in that mould, given its second fermentation in bottle and time on lees, and finished with 9.9 grams of sugar per litre, at the fuller end of brut.
Expect a rounder, fruit-forward style of Champagne; serve at 8 to 10 degrees as an aperitif or with charcuterie and roast poultry.
