Description
Condado de Haza Ribera del Duero Crianza comes from a steep riverside slope that Alejandro Fernández reassembled from hundreds of abandoned smallholdings.
Ribera del Duero sits on the high Castilian plateau, where hot days and cold nights give Tempranillo, known locally as Tinto Fino, both ripeness and acidity. Having shown at Pesquera in the mid-1980s that world-class wine could be made here by someone other than Vega Sicilia, Fernández established this second property on the banks of the Duero between Roa and La Horra, in the province of Burgos. The slope had lain abandoned for years and took three years of patient consolidation before the first vintage in 1988. The soils are rocky, the elevation higher than at Pesquera and the microclimate tempered by the river, which gives wines that are plumper and more textural than the compact Pesquera style. Winemaking follows the same lines: late hand-picking, vinification parcel by parcel with indigenous yeasts, eighteen months in barrique, and bottling without filtration.
Drinking well now and good for another five years or more; serve at 16-18°C with roast lamb, chargrilled beef or Manchego.
*Every effort is made to ensure the current vintage is accurate; however, variations can occur. If you are after a specific vintage, please contact us prior to ordering.
