Coreografia Priorat 2022

Coreografia Priorat is a clarete, the pale old-fashioned Spanish red style, co-made here from red and white Garnacha grown in Poboleda.

Priorat is better known for dense, llicorella-grown reds, so a clarete from the region is a deliberate change of direction. The wine is Tatjana Peceric's reimagining of Roc d'Aubaga, the clarete made at Terroir al Limit. Clarete was once the everyday format across much of northern Spain, made by fermenting red and white grapes together, and it is being revived by growers who have found the wines can be both serious and long-lived while remaining easy to drink young. This first release is 75 per cent Garnacha Negra and 25 per cent Garnacha Blanca from old vines in the village of Poboleda. The fruit spends five days on skins before pressing, then ages in concrete eggs, a vessel choice that keeps the texture round without adding oak. The result sits between a light red, a substantial rosé and a textured white.

Best drunk in its first few years, lightly chilled, with charcuterie, paella or grilled oily fish. Serve at around 16°C.
