Corofin Folium Vineyard Chardonnay 2019

Corofin Folium Vineyard Chardonnay is an organically grown Chardonnay from five rows of dry-grown vines in the Brancott Valley.

Planted by Fromm in 1996, the Folium vineyard has been owned and organically farmed since 2011 by Takaki Okada, who lives in a small house in the middle of his vines. The soil is Southern Valley clay around 1.5 metres deep over gravelly silt, holding enough moisture through a dry summer that irrigation is never needed. Corofin's allocation runs to five rows — 1,200 vines. Mike Paterson credits the dry-grown, ungrafted, deep-rooted material with delivering ripeness, precision and harmony at the same time. Winemaking follows the Wrekin, except that the whole volume was fermented in two 500-litre seasoned French puncheons.

Juicy citrus and white nectarine with white pepper, fresh ginger and a touch of ocean spray, mouth-filling and textured — a shade richer than the Wrekin bottling, and rounded off with a twist of mandarin bitterness. Serve at 12 degrees. Whole baked fish, roast chicken, or gruyère.
