Corofin Folium Vineyard Chardonnay 2022

Corofin Folium Vineyard Chardonnay is a weighty, dry-grown Chardonnay from the Brancott Valley.

Five rows, 1,200 vines, is the whole allocation from this site — planted by Fromm in 1996 and farmed organically since 2011 by Takaki Okada, a viticultural purist who lives among his vines. Southern Valley clay runs about 1.5 metres deep over gravelly silt, retaining enough summer moisture that the vines go without irrigation. Picking came a few days after Wrekin, on 26 March. Bunches were pressed with only the soft pressings kept, and fermentation, malolactic conversion and maturation all ran in seasoned puncheons and barriques for twelve months, followed by eight months in tank and bottling with no fining or filtration.

Set beside the linear, mineral Wrekin, this carries more weight around its bones while holding its shape: stone fruit, a nutty lees note, and a long close. Serve at 12 to 13 degrees. Roast pork belly, crayfish, or chicken with mushrooms and cream.
