Corofin Marlborough Chardonnay 2023

Corofin Marlborough Chardonnay is a village-level blend of coastal and foothill fruit from two Marlborough sites.

Brawn contributes 60 per cent, from Kaiapoi silt loam over pea gravel barely three kilometres from the ocean, where an old Mendoza clone now rare in the region supplies salinity. Wrekin makes up the rest, tucked into its own small locality in the foothills of the Southern Valleys, and brings the precision. The wine fermented on high solids and aged eighteen months in 500-litre seasoned French oak puncheons with two stainless barrels alongside. Mike Paterson builds these blends from the same vineyards as his single-site wines, which is why the village tier here rarely tastes like a step down.

Pulpy intensity and energy, with cool citrus and fleshy lime woven through silken fruit and a nutty complexity behind. The texture is sophisticated without any sense of heaviness. Serve at 12 degrees. Try it with roast chicken, grilled snapper, or a leek and comté tart.
