Corofin Settlement Vineyard Pinot Noir 2017

Corofin Settlement Vineyard Pinot Noir is a Marlborough Pinot Noir from a sliver of Dog Point's Omaka Valley site.

Settlement sits in the Omaka Valley south of Marlborough's Wairau Plains, fifteen years old at this point, organically certified and managed by Dog Point's viticulturist Nigel Sowman. Corofin's fruit comes from a 0.25-hectare strip at the top of the east slope, clay-rich and planted at 4,600 vines per hectare, cropped at close to a kilogram per vine. Handpicked on 19 March, the fruit spent five days in sealed tanks with 30 per cent whole bunches before foot treading; a natural ferment ran eight days followed by eight more on skins, then old barrel, spontaneous malolactic conversion, thirteen months on original lees and seven in tank.

Racy and firm, with waves of grenadine, bright plum and anise, then fine powdery tannins across a brambly close. Picked first each year, this block usually sits at the red-fruited end of the range. Serve at 14 degrees. Duck, roast chicken, or pork with fennel.
