Corofin Settlement Vineyard Pinot Noir 2022

Corofin Settlement Vineyard Pinot Noir is a Marlborough Pinot Noir from twenty-year-old vines on the Omaka Valley slopes.

Picked by hand on 19 March, the fruit was destemmed into a pair of one-tonne open fermenters, the bottom 15 per cent crushed by foot and the rest left as whole berries. Extraction happened once a day and gently; after nineteen days the wine went to seasoned oak for fourteen months, then eight months in tank before bottling unfined and unfiltered. The block is a tiny sliver at the top of the vineyard's east slope, clay-rich and planted at 4,000 vines per hectare to the 777 clone, on a certified organic Dog Point site managed by Nigel Sowman.

This block usually sits at the red-fruited, radiant end of the range, though the evolving phenolics Mike Paterson has noticed show plainly here — more grip, more savoury depth, cherry and plum over a firmer frame. Serve at 14 to 15 degrees with duck, lamb, or roast beetroot and lentils.
