Corofin Settlement Vineyard Pinot Noir 2023

Corofin Settlement Vineyard Pinot Noir is a refined Marlborough Pinot Noir cropped at 40 hectolitres per hectare.

Picking fell on 14 March, early as it always is for this parcel — a tiny sliver of twenty-year-old vines at the top of an east slope in the Omaka Valley, clay-rich, planted at 4,000 vines per hectare to the 777 clone, on a certified organic Dog Point site managed by Nigel Sowman. Plenty of whole berries, careful and delicate handling (jugotage, in Mike Paterson's words) and slow winemaking explain how a clay-rich site turns out something this finessed. Elsewhere in the range this block is the radiant, red-fruited one, and that still holds true.

Succulent red berry and sour cherry, with violets, damp forest floor and a line of brown spice running behind, and tannins that are powdery and nuanced. Serve at 14 degrees. Roast duck, pork loin with apple, or mushroom and thyme pasta.
