Corofin Wrekin Vineyard Chardonnay 2022

Corofin Wrekin Vineyard Chardonnay is a linear, mineral Chardonnay from a low-yielding Brancott Valley block.

Yields here are always small, and although 2022 was healthier than the year before at 25 hectolitres per hectare, the crop never exceeded what Grand Cru Burgundy permits. Fruit was picked by hand on 23 March and pressed gently as bunches to tank, with only the soft pressings kept; fermentation ran in two seasoned 500-litre puncheons and one 280-litre stainless barrel across seven leisurely weeks, followed by full malolactic conversion and twelve months' maturation, then eight months in tank. Planted in 2002 and farmed biodynamically under BioGro, the vineyard sits high in the valley on clay over greywacke.

Taut and linear, citrus-driven, with the chalk and phenolic grip that make this the more knife-edged of the two single-vineyard Chardonnays. A year or two will suit it. Serve at 12 degrees with raw kingfish, grilled flounder, or roast chicken.
