Corofin Wrekin Vineyard Chardonnay 2023

Corofin Wrekin Vineyard Chardonnay is a knife-edged Marlborough Chardonnay from a high block in the Southern Valleys.

Tucked into the foothills of the Southern Valleys and effectively a locality of its own, this vineyard went in during 2002; the Johns family own it and Jeremy Highland tends it. Clay-rich soils lie over greywacke mother rock, the rows run northeast at 4,000 vines per hectare, and the elevation makes this one of the highest sites in the valley, giving archetypal cool-climate fruit that balances fleshy texture against racy drive. Hand-harvested on 19 March and raised in 500-litre seasoned French oak puncheons, the wine aged through two winters in the cellar, building texture and freshness off its lees.

Of the two single-vineyard Chardonnays this year, this is the taut one — white stone fruit and Meyer lemon pulsing through a chalky finish. Serve at 12 degrees. Oysters, whole grilled fish, or pipis with parsley and garlic.
