Corofin Wrekin Vineyard Pinot Noir 2020

Corofin Wrekin Vineyard Pinot Noir is the second release from a biodynamically farmed block high in the Brancott Valley.

Late ripening defines this site, and Mike Paterson makes a virtue of it: keeping Pinot on the vine as long as the block allows, without compromising its integrity, always gives him the best result. The 14-hectare vineyard, planted in 2002 and farmed biodynamically under BioGro by Jeremy Highland for owners Jan and Andrew Johns, sits on clay over greywacke at the top of the valley. Winemaking barely differs from the Settlement bottling — whole berries sealed in tank for five days, a wild ferment lasting eight, then an immediate press to limit extraction, seasoned French barrels, and a finish in tank. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Darker and denser than the Omaka Valley wines, with brambly fruit, a savoury undertow and tannins that hold their shape. Give it some air first. Serve at 14 to 15 degrees with duck, venison, or a beef and mushroom pie.
