Corzano e Paterno Chianti Terre di Corzano 2023

Corzano e Paterno Chianti Terre di Corzano is the estate's core wine, a certified organic Sangiovese co-fermented with Canaiolo and matured in large casks.

The name translates as the soils of Corzano, and the soils are the point. The estate lies in the hills of San Casciano, south-west of Florence, outside the Classico zone but on ground of similar quality. The blend is 90 per cent Sangiovese co-fermented with 10 per cent Canaiolo, all hand-harvested from rocky, south-facing organic slopes. The soil here is alberese, the compact clay and limestone littered with pebbles that tends to give Tuscany's more aromatic reds. Around 15 per cent of the bunches are left whole, the ferment is spontaneous, and the wine matures in 25- and 40-hectolitre botti rather than barriques, a traditional choice that has become rare in Tuscany. Arianna Gelpke favours the softening effect of large-format wood on Sangiovese tannins, and the house style is transparent, with fruit purity ahead of extraction.

Ready on release and holding well for five or six years; serve at 16–18°C with smoky grilled meats, roast pork or a deep-flavoured lasagne.
