Description
Il Corzanello is the entry-level Toscana Rosso from Corzano e Paterno, named after the medieval fortified farmhouse on the property.
The estate sits in the hills of San Casciano Val di Pesa, south-west of Florence in the Chianti country, and is run by Aljoscha Goldschmidt, who makes cheese there as well as wine. This bottling is the lo-fi, everyday red of the range, released as a Toscana IGT rather than under the Chianti denomination, which gives the freedom to blend Sangiovese, including fruit from the estate's younger vines, with Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Grapes are picked by hand and given a pre-fermentation cold soak of nine days, which draws out colour and fruit gently before any alcohol is present, then fermented naturally in stainless steel with each variety vinified separately before the final blend is assembled. There is no ambition here beyond drinkability, and the wine is the better for it.
Drink over the next three years. It suits pasta with ragù, grilled sausages, pizza or a plate of pecorino; serve at 16-18°C.
