Corzano e Paterno Toscana Rosso Il Corzanello 2022

Il Corzanello is Corzano e Paterno's entry-level red, an IGT Toscana built on Sangiovese from organically farmed vineyards in the Chianti hills.

The estate sits at San Casciano in Val di Pesa, south-west of Florence, and farms organically. Il Corzanello takes its name from the medieval fortified farmhouse on the property and brings together Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon with a dollop of Merlot, a combination that puts it outside the Chianti rules and into the broader IGT Toscana category. The fruit comes chiefly from the estate's cooler sites, and the winemaking is tuned to keep the aromatics and bright fruit intact: a pre-fermentation cold soak of about a week, then a natural ferment in stainless steel. As winemaker Arianna Gelpke puts it, they are not looking for lots of structure, so the juice is separated from the skins after only a few days and finishes fermenting in tank. The result is supple and bright, with chalky Tuscan tannin and freshening acidity.

Ready on release and best drunk within three years. Serve at 16°C with barbecued chicken, a silky ragu or woodfired pizza.
