Croix & Courbet Arbois En Chemenot Savagnin Ouillé 2022

En Chemenot is a single-vineyard Savagnin from Arbois, made ouillé so the wine is topped up rather than aged under a veil.

Arbois is the largest of the Jura's village appellations, and the lieu-dit of En Chemenot lies just east of the town. Croix & Courbet's plot sits on a north-facing hillside at 350 metres on blue and grey marl, the soil most associated with dense, mineral Savagnin. The vines were planted in 2004 and the vineyard is farmed organically and biodynamically, work Damien Courbet is happy to point to given the quality now coming off the site. Some of the fruit also goes into the domaine's Côtes du Jura blend. The winemaking is as it is across the range: hand harvest, natural yeasts and minimal sulphur. This cuvée is vinified 90% in a concrete egg with the remaining tenth in a one-year-old barrel, a choice Croix makes for the tension the egg brings to the density of this vineyard's fruit.

Powerful and compact, it will drink well for the next eight years; serve at 11-12°C with roast pork, aged cheese or a curry that needs a mineral white.
