Description
A 1.5 litre magnum of Daniel Bouland's Morgon Corcelette Vieilles Vignes, from sixty- to seventy-five-year-old Gamay on granitic sand.
Corcelette is a lieu-dit at the north-western edge of Morgon, well away from the blue schist of the Côte du Py, on decomposed granite and sand between roughly 320 and 400 metres. The wines it gives are more perfumed and finer-boned than the schist parcels without losing structure. Bouland farms fewer than seven hectares of old vines from the hamlet of Corcelette in Villié-Morgon, working steep slopes by hand and treating with sulphur and copper, resorting to a fungicide only in awkward seasons. The grapes are hand-picked and fermented as whole bunches with indigenous yeasts in concrete vats, with two pump-overs a day, then aged in old Rousseau foudres and bottled unfiltered. A magnum holds twice the wine against much the same amount of dissolved oxygen at bottling, so it moves through its life more slowly than the standard bottle.
Worth keeping for five to twelve years, and enough for a table of six or more. Serve at 16°C with roast duck, a beef and mushroom pie or a board of cheese.
