Description
Morgon Corcelette Vieilles Vignes is Daniel Bouland's Gamay from vines of sixty to seventy-five years on the decomposed granite sand of the Corcelette lieu-dit.
Morgon is one of the ten Beaujolais crus and is usually discussed in terms of the Côte du Py, its dark hill of blue schist. Corcelette lies away from that, on granitic sand and stone at roughly 320 to 400 metres, and gives wines of more perfume and finer tannin. Daniel Bouland works fewer than seven hectares of old vines from the hamlet of Corcelette in Villié-Morgon, all of it by hand on slopes that reach a forty per cent gradient. He sprays sulphur and copper against oidium and mildew and turns to a fungicide only in difficult years. Fruit is picked by hand and fermented with whole bunches and indigenous yeasts in concrete, with two pump-overs a day, then raised in old Rousseau foudres and bottled without filtration. In some vintages the lieu-dit is split into a Sable cuvée from sand and a Cailloux cuvée from vines sitting on bare granite; this is the single Vieilles Vignes bottling.
It is drinkable now and has the frame to keep for a decade. Serve at 16°C with roast chicken, charcuterie or grilled mushrooms.
