A magnum of Daniel Bouland's Morgon from Délys, a tiny plot between Corcelette and Villié-Morgon planted in 1926.

Morgon is among the sturdiest of the Beaujolais crus, and Bouland is one of the growers who makes it in a serious, ageworthy style rather than as a light quaffer. He works under seven hectares from the hamlet of Corcelette, on steep ground between 320 and 400 metres with gradients reaching forty per cent, all of it tended by hand. His vines run from sixty to a hundred years old and are planted at high density; treatments are limited essentially to sulphur and copper. Délys is barely half a hectare of sand over granite, soils soft enough that the roots drive deep, and the wine is correspondingly perfumed and fine-grained rather than broad. The fruit is hand-picked, fermented whole-cluster with natural yeasts in concrete vats with twice-daily pump-overs, then raised in 2,000-litre foudres and bottled without filtration.

Drinking now and worth a decade or more in magnum, which slows its development further. Serve at 16–18°C with roast duck, charcuterie or a mushroom tart.
