David Duband Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru 2023

David Duband Charmes Chambertin is a grand cru from the broad vineyard lying on the lower slope directly below Le Chambertin.

Charmes-Chambertin sits south of the village of Gevrey-Chambertin, between the road and the grand crus of the mid-slope, and takes in the neighbouring Mazoyères-Chambertin, whose growers may sell their wine under either name. Soils are deeper and richer in clay than on the steeper crus above, which is why Charmes is the most openly generous and earliest-drinking of the Chambertin family rather than the most austere. Pinot Noir is the only grape. David Duband farms organically, works with a high proportion of whole bunches, extracts gently by infusion and raises the wine in oak barrel with new wood used in keeping with grand cru status, sealing it under a Diam closure.

Generous and fleshy for a Gevrey grand cru, it suits beef, game and mature cheese; serve at around 17 degrees.
