Dawson James Chardonnay 2018

Dawson James Chardonnay is a taut, barrel-fermented Tasmanian Chardonnay from a small label run by two of Australia's most experienced winemakers.

After long careers making well-known wines at large companies, Peter Dawson and Tim James started their own small label and chose Tasmania for its cool, long ripening season. Chardonnay builds flavour slowly there while holding the acidity that gives it line and length. The fruit is from the Derwent Valley in the island's south, known for fine, tightly structured Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Production is small and the approach restrained: careful fruit selection, barrel fermentation and maturation in French oak, then time to settle before release.

Mineral and tightly wound, with fine oak in support and extra texture from some bottle age. Serve at 10–12°C with roast chicken, scallops or a soft-rind cheese.
