Denton Estate Chardonnay 2024

Denton Estate Chardonnay is the top Chardonnay bottling from the View Hill vineyard in the Yarra Valley.

Two blocks make this wine: close-planted Gingin, which brings texture and weight through the middle, and the B95 plantings, which supply drive and a straight line of acidity. Both were hand picked on 20 February under clear skies and mild conditions, an early but unhurried start to vintage. In the winery the bunches were foot-stomped and then whole-bunch pressed into barrel, fifteen per cent of it new, for fermentation. A partial malolactic conversion gives the wine a glossy surface without blunting the citrus. It is a good demonstration of how well the team here reads the hill.

There is grapefruit and white peach, a saline hum, and a creamy edge from the malo that rounds the finish. Pour at 11 degrees. It handles richer food comfortably: roast pork belly, crab linguine, a chicken pie, or a soft washed-rind cheese.
