Denton Estate Pinot Noir 2024

Denton Estate Pinot Noir is a Yarra Valley Pinot Noir from the estate close-planted block at the top of the hill.

At the crest of the north-east-facing slope sits the close-planted MV6, set at 1.5 by 0.8 metres. That density pushes the vines to root deep and compete, and it produces the most concentrated and powerful Pinot Noir on the property. Picking fell on 29 February, a touch later than the year before, and ten per cent whole bunches went into the ferment. Two weeks on skins with gentle pump overs did the extraction, then the wine went to French oak, a third of it new, for eleven months. Granite under the sandy soil is never far from the picture.

Dark cherry and blood orange, with a spiced, savoury undertow and tannins that are fine but plentiful. Serve at 14 to 16 degrees, and open it an hour ahead. Duck breast, mushroom risotto, or grilled quail with a smear of beetroot suit it well.
