Denton Pinot Noir 2015

Denton Pinot Noir is a mature Yarra Valley Pinot Noir from a high-density block of MV6.

This bottling dates from the Luke Lambert era at View Hill, and it carries his signature: whole bunches in the ferment, wild yeast only, restrained new oak and no cosmetic work at bottling. The fruit came off a close-planted MV6 block on the granite hill, with twenty per cent bunches included and fifteen per cent new French oak, then bottle unfined and unfiltered. A decade on, a wine made that way has settled into its secondary phase, where primary fruit steps back and structure and savoury detail come forward. Bottle variation is part of the deal with older Pinot Noir handled this lightly.

Expect a tawny rim and a mellow, forward-developed nose, cranberry and blood orange giving way to leather, twiggy spice and dried flowers, with tannin still doing its work. Serve at 15 degrees and drink it soon after opening. Roast duck, or a plate of charcuterie.
