Denton Pinot Noir 2023

Denton Pinot Noir is a Yarra Valley Pinot Noir from the estate close-planted MV6 block.

Aspect does a lot of the work in this wine. The block faces north-east from the top of the slope, so it takes the gentle morning light and is sheltered from the hot part of the afternoon, which is why something this concentrated still keeps the vineyard's lift and elegance. The MV6 vines are planted tight at 1.5 by 0.8 metres and root deep into sandy soil over granite. Picking came on 15 March, with ten per cent whole bunches in the ferment and twelve days on skins under gentle pumpovers. Maturation was ten months in French oak, a third of it new.

Red cherry, rhubarb and a twist of orange peel, then a savoury, almost smoky finish carried on fine tannin. Fifteen degrees is about right. Serve it with roast chicken and thyme, salmon, pork with fennel, or a mushroom tart.
