Description
Disznókő Tokaji 1413 Szamorodni Édes is a sweet Tokaji made from whole bunches picked as they come, in a style produced in the region for centuries.
Szamorodni takes its name from the Polish for 'as it comes', or as it was grown: unlike Aszú, where botrytised berries are picked individually, the bunches arrive at the cellar whole, carrying a mix of very ripe late-harvest fruit, raisined berries and between 20 and 40 per cent noble rot. The 1413 in the name is the year Disznókő first appears in a land register. The wine is made along lines close to those used in Sauternes and aged for at least two years in ex-Sauternes barrels. Szamorodni comes in dry (száraz) and sweet (édes) versions; this is the sweet one, and it reflects what is planted in the vineyard, 93 per cent Furmint with seven per cent Hárslevelű. It finished at 150 g/L residual sugar against a racy 7 g/L of acidity, which is what keeps it mouth-watering rather than heavy. In character it recalls a lighter, less concentrated Aszú, with smoky satsuma, caramel, golden raisin and sandalwood spice.
It needs no further ageing and is flexible at the table: try it with foie gras, blue cheese or a citrus tart, served at 8–10°C.
