Description
Domaine Alain Graillot's Crozes-Hermitage is the benchmark wine of the appellation, grown on the rolled stones of the Terrasse des Chassis at Pont-de-l'Isère.
Alain Graillot arrived in Crozes-Hermitage in 1985 and more or less redefined what the appellation could do; his son Maxime now runs the domaine. The vines average between forty and fifty years of age and are managed organically, rooted in a sea of smooth rolled stones on the Terrasse des Chassis, where the soil was formed by ancient alluvial deposits of sand, gravel and river stone. The grapes were loaded into lined concrete vats without destemming and given a pre-ferment maceration of two to five days. After natural fermentation the wine was aged in used François Frères barriques of one to seven years, bought from leading Burgundy estates, with 20-hectolitre Stockinger ovals playing a growing part since 2011. The result is a rounded, classic Graillot Crozes with plenty of energy and finesse.
Good on release and capable of ten years or more. Serve at 16 to 18°C with roast lamb, grilled beef or a peppery charcuterie board.
