Domaine Albert Mann Pinot Noir 'Clos de la Faille' 2024

Domaine Albert Mann Pinot Noir Clos de la Faille comes off a monopole that runs on from the Hengst grand cru above Wintzenheim.

Maurice and Jacky Barthelme have farmed biodynamically since 1997 and hold Demeter certification. Soils shift down the slope: pink Vosges sandstone up top, yellow Jurassic shell limestone through the middle, white and pink quartz below. About a fifth of the fruit goes in as whole bunches, and ageing happens in small casks carrying roughly 20 per cent new wood, so the oak stays quiet.

Dark berries sit alongside cardamom, tea leaf and tobacco, with silky tannin and a cool, precise close. Open it at 16 degrees for duck breast, venison or a porcini risotto.
