Domaine Albert Mann Pinot Noir 'Grand H' Grand Cru 2023

Domaine Albert Mann Pinot Noir 'Grand H' Grand Cru is a structured Alsace Pinot Noir from the Hengst grand cru above Wintzenheim.

Hengst is a steep, south-east facing slope of marl and limestone, warm enough that Pinot Noir has always done well there, though the grape only gained grand cru status on the site in recent vintages. From their base at Wettolsheim, brothers Maurice and Jacky Barthelme have farmed biodynamically for over twenty years. Yields are low, picking is by hand, and the ferment uses wild yeasts with some whole bunches. It then goes into Burgundian barrels, a few of them new, and is bottled without heavy filtration.

This drinks more like good red Burgundy than a typical Alsace red, all red cherry and spice with a salty, mineral finish. Decant an hour ahead and serve at 15–17°C with duck, veal or mushrooms.
