Domaine Alphonse Mellot Pouilly-Fume 2021

Domaine Alphonse Mellot Pouilly-Fumé is a biodynamic Sauvignon Blanc from flint soils at Saint-Laurent-l’Abbaye, made by a family based across the river in Sancerre.

Pouilly-Fumé faces Sancerre from the eastern bank of the Loire, and its silex, or flint, soils are the source of the smoky character the name alludes to. This wine was originally bottled under the name of Emmanuelle Mellot, sister of Alphonse Jr; since she left to start her own project it has appeared under the domaine label. The parcel is 1.8 hectares of 40-year-old vines at Saint-Laurent-l’Abbaye, a village best known in the wine world as the source of Dagueneau’s Pur Sang. Farming is biodynamic, hand-tended and low-cropped, exactly as for the family’s Sancerre, and the winemaking follows a similar thread, though here half the juice ferments in stainless steel and the remainder in used tronconique oak casks.

Ready now and holding for four or five years. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled trout, goat’s cheese or asparagus.
