Domaine Alphonse Mellot Sancerre Edmond 2020

Domaine Alphonse Mellot Sancerre Edmond is a barrel-fermented Sauvignon Blanc from 50- to 90-year-old vines on the southern slope of La Moussière.

Sancerre sits at the eastern end of the Loire, and La Moussière is the Mellot family's home vineyard below the town. Edmond is drawn from the oldest vines on its southerly flank, where the Saint-Doulchard marls give way to weathered limestone rocks known locally as calcaires à astartes. The estate is farmed biodynamically, and yields for this cuvée are cropped lower still than for the Dix-Neuf. Fermentation and maturation take place in 600-litre barrels, with a portion raised in a 2,000-litre egg-shaped Taransaud Ovum, and the wine spends 10 to 14 months on fine lees. The result is a structured, savoury white built on depth and grip rather than the aromatic lift usually associated with the grape.

These wines rarely peak before five to ten years and can run to 20 or 30. Serve at 10-12°C with roast chicken, veal or a plate of hard alpine cheese.
