Domaine Alphonse Mellot Sancerre Génération Dix-Neuf 2019

Domaine Alphonse Mellot's Génération Dix-Neuf comes from the oldest vines in La Moussière, planted around a century ago and cropped at grand cru Burgundy yields.

La Moussière is the Mellot family's home vineyard, a large block on the slopes just outside Sancerre town. This cuvée takes only its oldest vines, at roughly 100 years, and yields are pushed to the lower end of grand cru Burgundy levels. The domaine is farmed biodynamically. The wine fermented and aged for twelve months in 2,000-litre tronconique wooden tanks before a further spell in steel on lees, and only about 500 cases are made each year. With its stablemate Edmond it stands as the antithesis of textbook modern Sancerre: extract-rich and tightly wound, built more like a white Burgundy than a Loire Sauvignon Blanc, yet carrying the racy acid core of a fine Riesling or Chenin. Candied citrus, gingerbread and iodine sit behind that structure. It is among the most distinctive whites made anywhere from the variety.

It needs several years and should keep for a decade beyond that. Serve with roast turbot, veal or a rich chicken dish at 10–12°C.
