Domaine Alphonse Mellot Sancerre La Demoiselle Blanc 2021

Domaine Alphonse Mellot Sancerre La Demoiselle Blanc comes from a small east-facing hillside planted in 1951 on the edge of the town of Sancerre.

The vineyard is one of the easier sites in the appellation to find, lying just below the Panoramic Hotel. Its deep soils are a mix of flint and flinty clay, the town itself sitting over the fault that runs through Sancerre and juxtaposes its silex, limestone and clay soils. Domaine Alphonse Mellot has been in the family since the sixteenth century and farms biodynamically, with Alphonse Junior handling the vineyards and cellar. Winemaking here essentially mirrors that of the domaine's La Moussière bottling, though yields are lower still, and the wine is barrel-raised in the house manner rather than made in tank. What sets it apart is restraint: a tighter, more mineral profile in place of overt aromatics, with real weight and cut on the palate.

Drinking well now and holding for five to eight years. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled fish, roast chicken or Crottin de Chavignol.
