Description
Domaine Alphonse Mellot Sancerre La Moussière is a biodynamic single-vineyard Sancerre, half of it fermented in large wooden vessels.
La Moussière is one of the great vineyards of the Loire, a gently rolling site of very stony, limestone-rich ground lying on ancient Saint-Doulchard marls — part of the same Kimmeridgian chain that runs north to Chablis. Alphonse Mellot farms it biodynamically and crops it low. Half the wine ferments in large wooden fermenters and is raised in oak casks, while the balance ferments and rests in traditional concrete vats before the two are blended. All of it then spends roughly 12 months on fine lees, which builds the deep, pulpy texture the wine is known for. The wood is there for structure rather than flavour, and the finished wine unfolds more like a white Burgundy than the brisk, tank-made Sancerre most drinkers are used to.
Good now and will develop over five to eight years. Serve at 11-12°C with grilled fish, roast chicken or a crottin de Chavignol.
