Domaine Alphonse Mellot Sancerre La Moussière 375ml 2020

La Moussière is the Mellot home vineyard and the domaine's flagship Sancerre, offered here in a 375ml half-bottle.

The site is one of the great vineyards of the Loire: a gently rolling amphitheatre of rocky, limestone-rich ground on the ancient Saint-Doulchard marls, part of the same Kimmeridgian chain that runs through Chablis. Combined with Mellot's meticulous biodynamic farming and low yields, it produces some of Sancerre's most striking and least typical wines. As usual, half of this cuvée was fermented in large wooden fermenters and raised in oak casks, which in no way compromises the purity and energy on offer, while the balance was fermented and raised in traditional concrete vats before the two were blended. The whole wine spent around twelve months on fine lees, which is where its deep, pulpy texture comes from.

Drinking well now and good for five years, though a half-bottle will move a little faster; serve at 10-12°C with goat's cheese, grilled fish or roast chicken.
