Domaine Alphonse Mellot Sancerre La Moussière 375ml 2021

Domaine Alphonse Mellot Sancerre La Moussière, in half-bottle, comes from a biodynamically farmed vineyard on Kimmeridgian marl at the heart of the appellation.

La Moussière is one of the great vineyards of the Loire Valley, a gently rolling site of very rocky, limestone-rich soil on the ancient Saint-Doulchard marls, part of the same Kimmeridgian chain that runs up through Chablis. Alphonse Mellot farms it biodynamically and crops it low, and the wine that results is among the more striking and least typical of Sancerre. Half the crop is fermented in large wooden fermenters and raised in oak casks; the balance is fermented and raised in traditional concrete vats, and the two are blended afterwards. All of it spends roughly 12 months on fine lees, which is where the wine’s depth of texture comes from. The oak is handled in a way that does not compromise the purity or energy of the fruit. This is the 375ml bottle.

Drinking now and will develop over five to seven years. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled fish, seared scallops or a fresh goat’s cheese.
