Domaine Alphonse Mellot Sancerre La Moussière 375ml 2022

Domaine Alphonse Mellot Sancerre La Moussière is the family’s flagship, from a biodynamically farmed vineyard on Kimmeridgian marl, here in a 375ml half bottle.

La Moussière is one of the great vineyards of the Loire, a gently rolling site on very rocky, limestone-rich ground — ancient Saint-Doulchard marls that form part of the same Kimmeridgian chain as Chablis. Mellot’s farming there is biodynamic, hand-tended and low-cropping, and the combination of soil and viticulture gives a Sancerre that sits apart from the appellation norm. Half the wine ferments in large wooden fermenters and is raised in oak casks; the balance ferments and is raised in traditional concrete vats before the two are blended. It then ages on fine lees for around 12 months, which builds the deep, pulpy texture the wine is known for. The half-bottle format suits a white of this weight.

Drinking well now and holding five to eight years. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled crayfish, roast chicken or a fresh goat’s cheese.
