Domaine Alphonse Mellot Sancerre La Moussière Rosé 2020

Domaine Alphonse Mellot Sancerre La Moussière Rosé comes from a two-hectare plot of Pinot Noir planted for rosé thirty years ago.

Sancerre is best known for Sauvignon Blanc, but Pinot Noir accounts for a significant share of the vineyard and supplies both the appellation’s reds and its rosés. Alphonse Mellot is one of the largest and longest-established domaines in the appellation, farming biodynamically on the slopes of La Moussière, the estate’s home vineyard on the clay-limestone terres blanches just below the town. This rosé is not an afterthought made from bleeding off red must: the plot was planted for the purpose three decades ago. The grapes are pressed slowly and only the free-run juice is kept, then vinified in two vessels, concrete cuve for cut and definition and large conical wooden vats for texture, which is where the wine gets its weight.

Drink over the next two years. Serve at 10-12°C with grilled fish, roast chicken or a plate of charcuterie.
