Description
This is the red counterpart to Alphonse Mellot's flagship white, made from Pinot Noir grown in the same vineyard below the town of Sancerre.
Sancerre is far better known for Sauvignon Blanc, but a substantial minority of the appellation is planted to Pinot Noir and a handful of growers make serious reds from it. La Moussière is the thirty-hectare home vineyard at the foot of the town, sitting on Saint-Doulchard marl, a soil close to unique within Sancerre, and it forms the core of an estate that now runs to around forty-seven hectares. The Mellot family have made wine here since 1513 and have christened the first-born son Alphonse ever since; the nineteenth generation, Alphonse Junior, runs the domaine with his sister Emmanuelle. They farm biodynamically, take in no chemical inputs, work the vines by hand and crop very low, and raise the reds in barrel, which gives a wine with more structure and depth than the appellation's lighter, fruit-driven style.
Drinks well from two or three years and holds for a decade. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, veal or a mushroom risotto.
