Description
Domaine Alphonse Mellot Sancerre La Moussière Rouge is a Pinot Noir from 5.5 hectares of densely planted vines on Saint-Doulchard marl.
Sancerre made red wine long before it became a Sauvignon Blanc name, and Pinot Noir still accounts for a useful share of the appellation. Mellot's plantings in La Moussière are old and closely spaced, and yields are held down to levels a Burgundian would recognise from a good grand cru. The estate farms biodynamically. This cuvée ferments in 60-hectolitre wooden vats, beginning with a cold maceration of five to ten days before alcoholic fermentation with punchdowns, then goes into young ex-Burgundy oak for 10 to 18 months. The result is linear and supple, closer in build to a fine Côte de Beaune red than to the light Sancerre rouge of old, with fine-boned tannins and a chalky structure underneath.
Worth three to five years before opening and good for a decade. Serve at 16°C with roast duck, veal or a mushroom and thyme tart.
