Description
Domaine Alphonse Mellot Sancerre Les Romains comes from a flint-veined lieu-dit named after the Roman road that ran down to the Loire crossing, and is bottled here in magnum.
Les Romains lies almost directly south of the town of Sancerre, across the fault line that exposes a vein of flint. Those soils suggest a kinship with Pouilly-Fumé on the opposite bank, though here the vines do not have to dig far before reaching pure limestone, and the wines keep a Sancerre profile. The vineyard covers 1.9 hectares planted at 9,000 vines per hectare; Vacheron and Gitton Père also hold vines in it. Compared with the Mellot cuvées from La Moussière, Les Romains gives racier acidity and a more citrus-driven character. The estate is farmed biodynamically and all fruit is hand-picked. Fermentation took place in 13-hectolitre tronconique casks and the wine was aged on fine lees for twelve months.
Drinking now and good for eight to ten years in magnum. Serve at 10-12°C with oysters, grilled whiting or a fresh goat's cheese.
