Description
Domaine Alphonse Mellot's Les Romains is a Sancerre from a 1.9-hectare flint vineyard named after the Roman road that ran down to the Loire crossing.
Les Romains lies almost directly south of Sancerre town, across the fault line that marks a vein of flint. Those silex soils suggest a kinship with Pouilly-Fumé over the river, but the vines do not have to dig far before they reach pure limestone, and the wine reflects both. The vineyard covers 1.9 hectares planted at 9,000 vines to the hectare; Vacheron and Gitton Père also hold parcels here. Mellot farms biodynamically and picks by hand. Fermentation takes place in 13-hectolitre tronconique casks, after which the wine spends twelve months on fine lees. Set beside the domaine's La Moussière, Les Romains gives racier acidity and more lime and citrus. The palate is firm yet fleshy, with substantial texture over a vibrant mineral backbone and a long, focused, chalky finish.
Drinking well now and good for six to eight years. Serve with grilled fish, oysters or roast chicken at 10–12°C.
