Description
Domaine Alphonse Mellot Sancerre La Petite Moussière Rouge is the estate's entry-level Pinot Noir, from younger vines on the Saint-Doulchard marls of La Moussière.
Sancerre is far better known for Sauvignon Blanc, but around a fifth of the appellation is planted to Pinot Noir, and on the right marl soils it can be very good indeed. Alphonse Mellot, whose family has been in Sancerre since the seventeenth century, farms the large La Moussière vineyard just below the town. Petite Moussière is drawn from the younger vines within it, growing on Saint-Doulchard marls, the heavier calcareous clay that gives the wines their flesh. Despite the diminutive in the name, there is a real plumpness of fruit and vinous depth here. The intention is a more open and approachable style than the Moussière proper, so the fruit is given a gentler maceration and a shorter élevage.
Ready on release and good for four or five years; serve lightly chilled at 15–16°C with roast chicken, salmon or a mushroom tart.
