Description
Domaine Alphonse Mellot Sancerre Petite Moussière Rouge is the domaine's entry-level Pinot Noir, from vines its owners still consider young at forty-five to fifty-five years.
Sancerre is known first for Sauvignon Blanc, but Pinot Noir has been grown on these hillsides for centuries and now accounts for roughly a fifth of the appellation's plantings. The Mellot family has been in Sancerre since the sixteenth century, and La Moussière is the domaine's home vineyard, a large amphitheatre of Saint-Doulchard marls on the edge of the town. The estate is farmed biodynamically, with horses used on the steeper parcels. Petite Moussière comes from the younger vines within that site. The aim is a more open, approachable style than the Moussière rouge proper, so the fruit is macerated more gently and the wine spends less time in barrel, keeping the emphasis on brightness and lift rather than structure.
Approachable on release and worth keeping for five or six years. Serve at 16-18°C with roast duck, mushroom dishes or a plate of charcuterie.
