Domaine Alphonse Mellot Sancerre Satellite 2022

Domaine Alphonse Mellot's Satellite is a Sancerre from four hectares in Chavignol, including holdings in Le Cul de Beaujeu and Les Monts-Damnés.

Chavignol lies west of Sancerre town, and its steep Kimmeridgian marl slopes are the most highly regarded in the appellation. The Mellot family has held vines there for more than 50 years but only began bottling them separately in 2008. The four hectares are spread across five parcels, all on Kimmeridgian soils, two of them on the revered terroirs of Le Cul de Beaujeu and Les Monts-Damnés. Vine age runs from 40 to 77 years and the old plants crop lightly. The domaine farms biodynamically. The wine fermented spontaneously, was aged in large, mature oak casks and bottled without filtration, which puts it closer in construction to white Burgundy than to a tank-fermented Sancerre. The name was Alphonse Mellot Senior's tongue-in-cheek comment on where he felt Chavignol stood in the Sancerre order; his friend Gérard Boulay, who lives in the village, was only mildly amused.

It needs another two or three years to show properly and will keep well beyond that. Serve with grilled fish, roast veal or Crottin de Chavignol at 10–12°C.
