Description
Domaine Antoine Jobard Beaune 1er Cru Epenottes comes from just under a hectare of 40-year-old vines right on the Pommard boundary.
Jobard is far better known for the whites of Meursault, and the small range of Beaune reds sits slightly apart from the rest of the domaine's work. Les Épenottes lies at the southern end of the Beaune premier crus, immediately adjoining Pommard, and the affinity shows: there is plenty of clay in the soil here, and the wines tend towards a layered, generous shape rather than the leaner style found further north in the appellation. Antoine Jobard's parcel is close to a hectare and the vines are approaching 40 years old. The reds are handled in much the same spirit as the whites, with restrained extraction, very little new wood and bottling after around a year on lees, so the wine keeps its perfume and its structure without any obvious oak sitting on top.
Approachable from two or three years and good for a decade. Serve at 16-18°C with roast pork, coq au vin or a mushroom risotto.
